“[The son of man] was given authority, glory and sovereign power; all nations and peoples of every language worshiped him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, and his kingdom is one that will never be destroyed.”
(Daniel 7:14 NIV)
Happy early New Year! This time of year is full of change. A time many spend in reflection on the past while setting future goals and new ways to challenge or grow themself. Our modern world is full of advancements that allow us to move, change, and grow in unimaginably faster ways. All of this provides many blessings – such as the new, expeditious way information and knowledge can be shared. It was not even 200 years ago where if you wanted knowledge, you would either need to meet with a field expert in person, or read a book. If you had exhausted the resources geographically near you, either expensive travel or a long wait ensued. With the invention of search engines and online databases, the digitalization of almost all media forms, and the continued progression of ensuring all have access to the online web, information can be with the inquirer almost immediately. This ease of access has revolutionized how we acquire knowledge.
As it relates to biblical insights, recent discoveries and conversations that are shaping our understanding of the inner workings of scriptures are incredible; however, despite all this new in our world, it is amazing and reassuring to see that some things stay the same. The Bible’s enduring message and God’s unchanging promises provide a solid foundation in a world of constant change. Even with our newest ideas, the text of the Bible has remained unchanged throughout history. Only the slightest copying errors have been noted and adjusted. For a collection of books to be passed down and hand-copied for over 1000 years and only contain a handful of minor inerrancies is an incredible feat.
“‘And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.’”
(Genesis 3:15 NIV)
Throughout the thousands of years, God’s promises have remained. He has established his cosmic temple in the hearts of his believers. While we serve and worship him, he pours out his love and blessing onto us. God’s spirit is just as alive and active in us as it was the day in Acts 2 and Acts 10. In a season of both commercial and general busyness, let’s not forget to take the time and create the space to reflect on the everlasting promises of God. After generations of slavery in Egypt, working obscene hours in the extreme heat everyday, God calls his people to set aside one day to rest. Not necessarily to not do anything, but to set aside the laborious tasks in an effort to reflect on the one through whom all is provided, God. To remind his people that busyness is not the goal, but an eternal contentment.
Let’s take the time to rest and reflect on the everlasting promises of God. May we find renewed strength and purpose in God’s unchanging word. Have thoughts, questions, or other verses you think are applicable? Please leave a comment below!
